When Ilia Cladakis came across the little Post War Terrace in Darlinghurst, he knew that this was the perfect place to bring his childhood dream alive. Enlisting the help of long time mentor Yong Ong and best mate Alex Giuttari, they set about transforming the space into Monkey Magic- an Asian Street food and drink themed venue, drawing inspiration from the hit 1970’s TV Show of the same name.
The venue itself paints a quirky picture; natural brick walls, marble floors and ornate timber windows which pay homage to the venues previous incarnations of its past lives as bars, restaurants and cabaret houses dating back to the early 1960’s…
Through his vast travels, Head Chef and Co-Owner Yong Ong brings to Darlinghurst his unique Asian Street Food. Learning his trade in classical cuisine around Sydney, he would take his skills to Malaysia, Hong Kong and China. He brings his unique experiences to Monkey Magic, where his satay sauce is a crowd pleaser, and sweet scents wafting from the kitchen excite you before you’ve even seen the menu! BBQ Chinese Satay, Crispy Dumplings and Steamed Pork Buns are just some of the regular items, with regular specials such as sticky bbq pork, salt and pepper crab noodles and crispy noodle salad also making their way through the list.
A place that has its own beer is always a good way to know you’ve found a winner. On top of it’s own beer- a recipe put together by the three boys, Monkey Magic has a vast array of craft beers brewed all around Sydney, a wine list to satisfy all, and a cocktail list that suits all tastebuds. Think floral flavours with the Geisha, or try our Pandan Espresso Martini. Want something stronger? Our Chairman’s Old Fashion will satisfy even the fussiest rum drinkers.
Monkey Magic’s venue is a perfect place for functions. We can cater for any function from 5- 100! The split rooms mean the venue can be hire exclusively, where you can order a whole suckling pig, or just have a small area available for you and 5 friends. Monkey Magic has free venue hire to ensure that your money is better spent elsewhere!
